Also,we here in America didnt start the slave trade,the Dutch did.The Dutch also purchased them from other Africans who themselves were black.The long trips oversea was brutal and the ones who was lucky enuff to be rescued here on Americas shores would have faced far worse if they woulda continued the journey farther than Americas shores for the Dutch were very brutal. Yes some slave owners were violent,but many viewed their slaves more as employees...they was fed,clothed and housed.As a matter of fact their are decendants of slaves today living in big beautiful plantation homes on beautiful land given to them by who? I haven't read much of this thread ( thankfully ) but I do agree with the glancing comment that the civil war wasn't about slavery. Just like the Iraq war wasn't about Freedom baby, yeah! Lincoln would have allowed slavery to persist in some fashion if he could peaceably restore the Union. The whole war was about re-establishing empire, hey? The fact the South had slaves made a nice accessory argument to why this whole thing was necessary, and as the way history revises itself to the political demands of each generation, we end up with this fantastic story about how wonderful Lincoln was - a racist man who had no intention of allowing the "negro" to vote, marry white women, or sit on juries in testimony against whites. In fact he intended to repatriate all the freed slaves back to Africa; it was a historical tragedy in some sense that he was assassinated before that could happen, because I dare say none of the descendents of repatriated blacks would have damn near the victim ideology that American blacks carry.
