The character’s technicolor look, which features striped sleeves and boots, lots of stars and an arching rainbow on her dress, became forever iconic. The series was also adapted into the 1985 movie Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer. After the show was canceled, it found more fans as it was released on VHS. The character was also ubiquitous on merch, covering everything from books and albums to bed sheets and birthday cakes and was, for a time, Mattel’s top-selling toy.
Hallmark previously rebooted the character in a 2014 miniseries that streamed on Feeln, now called Hallmark+. Emily Osment voiced Rainbow Brite while Molly Ringwald voiced the Dark Princess.
Variety also shared that Crayola will lead licensing and merchandising for the new series.
The Rainbow Brite news comes on the heels of announcements of other movies based on '80s and ‘90s nostalgia. Lily Collins is set to star in a Polly Pocket movie, while Daniel Kaluuya is attached to a Barney film.
