Lithium-ion battery waste fires are increasing, and vapes are a big part of it

Wow, this article made me feel a little better about myself. I've been vaping for years, on the logic that it's more than likely less harmful than analog cigarettes, and in that time, I've gone from using mostly 18650 mods to 21700 mods at home, and Vuse sticks for out and about. All are...

Report: Discord partners with JP Morgan Chase, Goldman Sachs for a 2025 IPO

Haven't combed through all five pages of comments, but what I'm really dreading is how the transition to the new hot platform will leave millions of support comments for indie applications abandoned and inaccessible. At least many of the old forums are still in use and searchable (doom9, etc)...

AMD launches new Ryzen 9000X3D CPUs for PCs that play games and work hard

This exactly. I've got a 7900X3D, and love it for gaming WHILE running background encoding tasks. Having 3d cache on both chiplets would have been a reason to upgrade, but I guess I'm waiting another cycle.

2GB Raspberry Pi 5’s new chip also cuts power use by up to 30%, testing shows

I've been contemplating getting a pi for this purpose, and it somehow never occurred to do this. I'm setting up a docker compose file as we speak.

8BitDo’s Retro IBM-inspired keyboard could use more retro

I can't recommend Model F Labs enough; I had to wait 14 months for my F77 after ordering it in March of 2021, but I've been using it as my daily driver for two years now, and while it could stand to have the keycaps cleaned for the 2nd time, it still looks and feels brand spanking new.

Here’s why SpaceX really needed to change out that part on Starship

Having just watched the launch, I'm only slightly disappointed at the "Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly" of the whole thing. I'd never seen a stage flip so rapidly in such a controlled manner as the first stage did as it turned back around. I know almost nothing about this stuff beyond science...

Florida malaria outbreak still going with local cases now at 7

Having had malaria twice (growing up in SE Asia), I can confidently attest it SUCKS. Makes me glad I got the hell out of FL.

Nvidia quietly boosts the video encoding capabilities of GeForce GPUs

For Plex specifically, there's a chart here: https://www.elpamsoft.com/?p=Plex-Hardware-Transcoding Granted, that's based on hardware capability, without taking into consideration any driver limitations.

LastPass says hackers have obtained vault data and a wealth of customer info

I've used EnPass for years, and I like their implementation - it uses the users own cloud storage (GDrive, OneDrive, iCloud, etc), and only syncs the file between clients, never a centralized cloud. Only downside is that they're small enough that I've never been able to convince an employer to...

Webcam buying guide: The Ars picks, from affordable to extravagant

I have a C920, and would like to replace it, because it doesn't work well for playing Magic on Spelltable; mounting my phone every time is a pain. I'm trying to interpret these results, but am a bit confused. Anyone have suggestions for this specific use case?

Click! 2022 Nobel goes to chemistry made simple and reliable

And apparently Bertozzi played keyboards in a college band w/ Tom Morello, which is something I doubt most Nobel Laureates can claim. >_< https://twitter.com/tmorello/status/1577694126610337795

As a meteorologist, Hurricane Ian is the nightmare storm I worry about most

I live in Lehigh Acres, just east of Fort Myers; the water in the street is already 18 inches deep. Granted, the water was up to 3 feet during Irma, and it still didn't get up to the houses (which are built on artificial rises). I REALLY hope this doesn't get worse, but it probably will.

Nvidia’s Ada Lovelace GPU generation: $1,599 for RTX 4090, $899 and up for 4080

Nvidia takes first step toward open source Linux GPU drivers

They might, however, lose some of the differentiators between their "consumer" GPUs and their much more expensive "workstation" GPUs. IE, right now, it's a PITA (although simple) to patch the consumer GPU drivers to allow for unlimited video encode threads, as this functionality is reserved...

FS: EVGA 3080 XC3 ULTRA HYBRID, new from EVGA Queue

I can only imagine how much shipping from Florida the UK might be, but I'm willing to find out if you're interested. Although, EVGA did announce that they're working on restocking most high-end SKUs, which I imagine includes this one.

FS: EVGA 3080 XC3 ULTRA HYBRID, new from EVGA Queue

It should absolutely fit. My son's computer is living in a 4000D at the moment, and it shares the same chassis. Looking at this image, you can see that the CPU radiator is connected at the top of the case, and in this configuration, you would then place the GPU radiator at the front of the case...
