not many actual trolls. By definition a troll just cruises these boards with the sole intent of causing mayhem and anger. Once we rise to their bait, they feel fulfilled in their mission. It's easy to get sucked into a pissing contest with them. A poster today (probably a sock) using the name brian damage is such a person. He is a classic troll and admitted it in one of his posts. I have him on ignore (my only one) and if we all just ignore him, he will dry up and go to greener pastures.

What kills me is we all have the opportunity to discuss pretty much anything we want without much restriction with people all over the world, which to me is a good thing, and the ability to learn new stuff is unlimited. But the only thing that really goes on is the worlds biggest pissing contest where nobody wins and if you did win there is no prize. Most people think they are 100% correct 100% of the time and everyone else is wrong. People think only their ideas, beliefs, methods and political party is the only correct one. I think people could learn a lot of things if others would have a little respect and not crash every goddamn thread on the board for meanness. I don't think many have ever learned the concept of if you cannot add something good to a thread or if you don't like the topic, don't comment, back out and move on. Ok my rant is meaningless and over.

So you're a sock, most people that tells someone what they think of them is a person that knows them. So if you're a new member you would not know anyone and therefore shouldn't have a whole lot to think of someone....

 

The good thing about this forum is that it lets you speak your mind, say the things you want to say, and not have to face consequences for it in your everyday life. Given these circumstances, it's quite a surprise that we only have a few trolls.

In my everyday life, outside my close group of 4 friends, it's impossible for me to be open about my views on religion, politics, economics and foreign affairs without causing a backlash or at the very least a fuss. Often my views are not mainstream, and while would be welcome throughout much of the United States, in the UK they prove to be unpopular. Now, while I care very little about how my views affect other people, I do care how it affects my position within the workplace as well as my future employment prospects. Likewise, I don't have the energy to argue with people whose arguments are copied verbatim from the newspapers they read. It's just not worth the hassle and awkwardness it causes. That's why I like this place, here I can argue with both die hard liberals and Christian right wing extremists all I like, without having to ask any of them the next day if they would like to be an external for some undergraduate's dissertation viva.

People here tend to know what the hell they are talking about, they have looked at multiple sources of data, researched the context, and drawn their own conclusions, more often that not, I think they are wrong, but at least they aren't just regurgitating the conventional wisdom which anyone that has taken a moment to look at the facts would know is trash.
