Just to show everyone how dull-witted I am, I just noticed that ILoveMyJob made this thread a sticky. Many thanks!

We now have seven 1st place votes distributed among five stories and seven 2nd place votes for six stories. Interesting....

 

On the matter of voting math:

1. Thinking about it makes my brain hurt.

2. We've had twenty-five prior "regular" CAWs, a CAW 8.5, CAW SS, and five KAWs. Voting has been done both by public site poll and anonymously. Some contests were close, even decided by a single vote, but declaring a clear winner hasn't been a problem. Yet.

3. Theoretically it would be possible for one entry to get the majority of both first and second place votes. If that happens, the story wins all the marbles (such as they are), and we can lay to rest all questions about which entry was most popular. Based on the wide spread of votes so far, I'd say that's an unlikely scenario.

4. Traditionally, Hosts allow multiple votes when the entry list is good size. Fifteen stories seems to be the cut-off between two and three votes per member. I flipped a coin and decided on two votes and three total weeks to read and decide.

5. Weighted voting (first place = 5 points, second = 3, third = 1, or similar) could increase the possibility of a tie. Also, it's mathematically possible that a story which was no one's first or second choice could win.

We've only been at this voting thing for about twelve hours. Participation is good, as it has been throughout this entire CAW.

With nine voter's choices now recorded, a clear trend is emerging -- diversity.

People like different things. Most entries now have at least one vote for either first or second place. It seems readers like a lot of what you writers made available. To me that says the quality of our field this time is high.

Well, apparently, the PC issues I had were not caused by the HDD. Or maybe they are, but there's another issue. Or 3 HDDs in a row are faulty. Or maybe ram. Or cables. Or Power supply. Or, perhaps, BIOS battery, which seems to be creating a problem of its own. Video card? Naah... maybe it's the motherboard. Long story short, I've had it enough at the moment, and probably won't be around to see who won, hence... congrats to the winner! I knew you'd win from the start

Now, let's see in which lake the processor would sink the most... hmm...

I've been trying to work my way through the stories and comment on each before the end of the voting, even if those comments are brief. Having read through several already I have to say that as ever the standard is very high, the CAW has once again brought out the best in everybody. Well done to all the entrants, and our host too.

 

Ten voters have made their opinions known so far, not all of them contributors to this collection. That means not all entrants have made their decision, and many people who commented on stories haven't cast their votes. We're about halfway there. At this point, it's wide open. While some stories have more than one first or second place vote, a number of entries now have at least one mark in their column on my chart.
